The Enemy Within
I could always feel the cracks, Long before they appeared, But to whom could I confide, Without feeling so weird? More than a minor headache, Less than a migraine, It was just a constant trickle, A delicate stream of pain. Resonating with any company, Echoing whenever alone, It became my enemy within, Travelling where I roamed. It’s presence lurked within me, Chains yanked around the beast, Conceived from depths of hell, With a stench like the deceased. The beast had no master, That the devil could instruct, Fists glowing white with tension, Holding its’ chain in my glove. I released it once or twice, When preparing to go to war, The brass rounds were popping, Blood scattered over the floor. Seldom few would know, How my enemy survives, Or how I restrain its flesh, Behind my pale hide. I scoff and laugh if off, For everyone has their own beast, Lurking deep within, Pulling against their leash. The day my beast escaped, Cracks snaked across my skull, A thick grey mist appeared, Memories became null. I floated for so many weeks, Intoxicated while flying, Mind lost within the clouds, Sick of people prying. Now my greatest foe, The hideous enemy within, Became my only saviour, As it pulled my bloody head in. (c) 2015 PJ Bayliss
