Choices
I did not choose my life, I was born into it; The lonely little girl was my path to follow. Did I wish to bury a baby and a husband? Life is full of paths and we must face them. But I have made choices, yes I have. When mother was sick, I was there for her, I gave up my life to help until the end; Everything I could do, I did for my mother, The only thing I could not do, is die for her. I stood by her coffin, and I was proud. The choice I have made with my poetry is clear, From the very depth of my soul with a dripping pen; I keep memories of my beloved alive, The beloved live in my poems, in my gossamer lines. Oh, some think my writing is melancholy. I made a decision to change, to go back to school, Leaving a good job to follow a childhood dream; It was hard, very difficult, but I did it, Now I am a nurse in palliative care, that was my choice. I help the dying elderly die with dignity. And my life and beliefs are all my own, mine alone, I will not allow anyone to try to control me ever; This existence is too short to be a puppet dangling, And today, my choice is silence and tranquility at home. The clicking clock of life ticks until the end. __________________________ September 7, 2015 Verse For the contest, The Choices We Make In Life, sponsor, Edward Ebbs First Place
