A Desiccated Dragon
A Desiccated Dragon This little green dragon so sweet and so small Had lived most his life in the shade of a wall He hid from the sun for it wasn't his friend And he knew in the sun his life might soon end But today in the shade of a bush he did spy A little girl dragon that had caught his eye She gave him a look that he couldn't resist Cross over the sidewalk she had to insist So out of the shade and into the heat The little green dragon on little green feet Started to scamper, started to run Ignoring the heat of the hot summer sun But half way across, he stumbled and fell And thought that he needed to rest for a spell But the rest that he took was a minute too long And his feet were stuck fast,he knew something was wrong So there in the heat, on the sidewalk he laid And the high cost of lust was the price that he paid Cold blooded he lived, hot blooded he died As the heat of the sun boiled the blood there inside Walking out of a meeting last Sunday with fellow poets, we spied a small lizard on the sidewalk - apparently dead from the heat. We were talking about where we got our inspiration for poems and I said it might be as simple as looking at something like this little lizard. One of the poets said we could call it A Desiccated Dragon. I went home and wrote this.
