A Child's Memory of the Sea
I still remember the first time I saw the sea I was yet a child of maybe two or three I have heard of the vastness of such a place filled with water And I could not wait to see for myself this place of wonder It was during some holidays The whole family was going to spend some time by the sea Some time to relax, to smile, to forget about their hays And I, greatly loved and pampered, was in total ecstasy Wow, how comforting felt the sand when I walked into it How big seemed the sea itself How dangerous seemed the waves, they took away my breath So scared was I that I even refused to enjoy on the sunny beach, the sun's treat In my young mind, the sea was a danger With one swirly wave, it would easily swipe me under The sea would then control me As if it was that which did overpower me Still a child, I did then wonder about who could have made such a creation Faced with the sea, I could only be in a state of submission The sea is but the home of the fish For me it was but the place where the skies and the waters clash The whole family did enjoy a dip in the water I sat in a shadowy place, somewhere safer A white crab did walk by my feet I looked at it, in dumb silence, hoping, that it would not bite I then wondered if the sea was not a big blue jelly A sort of thing with a texture made of beauty Maybe if I was a giant, I could eat it with a spoon Maybe, yes, maybe then, dangerous would it not seem to be! A giant if I was, I would have swam I would have walked, not scared of being swallowed Not scared of drowning, a giant conquering the whole sea A giant, walking around, with a hungry stomach and a big spoon!
