The Ocean Is For Me
I grew up by the ocean The fresh salt air and sea breeze Soft, sandy beach and the cry of the seagull Loved swimming, riding in the waves with ease My dad was a commercial fisherman Brought home swordfish, lobster and sea bass We learned to fish as we grew, and tried our luck We loved the ocean, and the waves nothing could surpass Out in the ocean in dad’s boat we went for fishing and fun The rolling swells, nothing stable beneath our feet Sparkling water like a million jewels as far as I could see And on the shore the reaching waves always come to greet One day a giant grey whale surfaced by our boat Amazing skin with fields of white barnacles, spray of breath arose Then down into the deep he went on his journey home It seems like eternity is captured in the waves; on and on it goes Tall forests of brown kelp adorn the rocky lands before the shore Deep upon deep, wave upon wave, no one knows Splendid creatures never seen by man abound, and more, and more Ah, to watch the evening fog roll in across the bay, the shroud All covered in a cloud, so tight and soft, a sure breath of the sea To ride upon the sea in a ship or speeding with the wind and sails Such a blessing, such a journey, yes, the ocean is for me
