Second Encounter With Jack
I was a little older now, about in my early teens... I was in the house eating soup with the family It was pouring like crazy outside, and I was very worried My mother was getting worse day by day, And has been the subject of every dinner talk, My dad, silent and somber, my brothers furious…my sister, in tears I looked out the window Watching the streams of water flow down the glass The lights outside revealed the same boy standing in the rain He looked utterly miserable, his expression caught in both anguish and horror My father helped my mother to bed as my siblings took their dishes I poured the remainder of my dinner into a goblet I cupped my hands over the top to keep the warmth in, And quietly slipped out the door toward the boy Seeing me, he knelt down, whimpering quietly “She’s dead…she’s dead….my mum is dead…” I sat with him on the ground, holding the cup tightly “What are you saying Jack? Why are you bleeding?” He looked up at me angrily, the rain mixing with his tears And he forced a smile “I will never be sorry….not for your cat, and not….for the slut….” There was a long silence… I gathered my composure, took his hand, and helped him up “Here….take the soup….drink it….I don’t want you sick, and you look terrible…” He stared at the goblet and back at me “..why are you being so nice to me?” I sighed….I didn’t even know…. “Come on…” I took his arm firmly. “I have a place for you to stay…” I led him into my yard and to our small tool shed, Pushing him in and shutting the door I felt like I had committed the murder, bringing him here… “I want you to eat…I’ve got to go now….stay here, and I will bring you food tomorrow.” He gazed at me with those silver eyes…. “There’s a bale of hay here you can sleep on…its comfy. No one comes in here...but our cat might….“ I trailed off and looked away sadly… “It’s…well, it’s comfortable…and there’s a blanket in the—” “In the cabinet over there, I know…” He drank the soup slowly as I stared at him in astonishment… Jack smirked and shrugged. “Could use some more salt couldn’t it?”
