Spring Lessons
After a long, cold winter, I become anxious for the next season, Bringing ever longer days, fresh flowers and green grasses, Colours of every hue imaginable found in the new blooms, Dried vines and old growth removed from our gardens in preparation. Everywhere we see life spring forth, Forest turns green, its canopy thickening, protecting the floor below, Gardeners plough the land, tilling the soil, planting their next crop. Heavenly, the feel of new grass on bare feet, I am alive! Just a month ago it snowed, winds howling with Arctic air, Keeping us indoors for too many long hours, Longing for this moment when the first flowers bloom again, Motherhood! Nearly impossible it is, to deny the spirituality, Of the changing of the seasons; of new life in all its glory, Privy are we to this yearly miracle. Quirky I am to be reminded now, that with spring and its abundance comes greed. Reminded that humanity has succumbed to capitalism, Saddened to be reminded that our resources are being destroyed, Tribal teachings return to me as I strive to protect our environment. Unfettered, I strive to leave this land of ours better than I found it, Viewpoints vary on this topic, leaving us with cases of ultimate destruction. Where once luscious river flowed, the land now raped for mining purposes, Xeriscape is all that remains after the deforestation practices, Years it will take to return this paradise to paradise again, but do they care? Zero tolerance, lest nothing remain for future generations! 12 Feb 2015
