Before that we had to do with mess-boys to bring us and as they had little interest in the work and the crew hall suffered their unappetizing nearness. Some of the women were married or had a boyfriend amongst the crew others not and they had a choice amongst men knocking on their cabin door with water combed hair. Being in the catering back then it was easy to charm them since we were with them and took their side in a dispute, the downside they were homely and middle aged.
