The Shadows In the Fire
My unsteady gaze falls across an old room Where gentle shadows frolic in the light of the fire. They invite me to play and I smile at the fumes But I shake as I rise, and fall when I tire. I look to my body to know why I fell To find I'm an infant In terror, I yell! But the yell doesn't sound, Its a shattering bawl. The shadows start laughing And point from the wall. My sister runs in, An infant as well, She tenderly chuckles At the fact that I fell. She touches my face, And kisses my knee, She turns to the fire and lights up with glee. The shadows are dancing, They wave her to near. I try to scream no But my sister can't hear. She prances after the shadows, To the fiery glows. She climbs into the furnace And the door starts to close. She turns back in panic, But is trapped in the flames. She tries for the handle And screeches with pain. I want to stand up And open the door But my body falls down And the shadows laugh more.
