I Guess God Comes Cheap
I Guess God Comes Cheap I saw His portrait at a sale down the road. Held up by a tree and a nail. I bought God for $3.95. Having a 5, I paid a little extra. Paid more for God. I wanted Him and hung Him up. I saw Him again at the .99 store on a wire hook by the Ivory soap. Jesus Soap On a Rope I laughed out loud, Wash Away Your Sins With Jesus. Washing soles, washing souls I bought 12. 12 disciples to give, bearing Christmas gifts. I saw Him a third time with a blind man on the street. He was selling pencils with Jesus’ face in neon green. He had a card attached teaching you how to read when you can’t see. He wanted 4 bucks. Gathering change from pockets, I only had 3. I asked him for a break. Looking with his visionless eyes he said, “Son, there’s no bargaining with God” Embarrassed, I shrugged, turned away from him, from them. He touched my shoulder, “For you, it’s free. He paid the price.” I didn’t want to take it. I hadn’t paid. I walked away, feeling the cool of my silver coins dropping into my pocket. Not able to let go of my Day-glow Jesus.
