I Stopped and I Looked Back
I met a man today while going about my own way He said he knew the way to nirvana And he was sure I wanted to head that way Say what? I quickly said Yeah man you look sad and I know how to cure dejection and dismay He was a kind sort And not too friendly or imposing I listened intently And wondered what his hidden meaning He said it’s over there That is where nirvana must be Why? I asked hurriedly It’s there as it is ahead of you And a place where I feel the Past won’t find you But I am not lost I said Then why the tears as You scurry away Life is full of weights That pull me down I said I cry because I was feeling alone And tears help to soothe my cares away No one to share your load with he asked Yeah I said but I carry my own burden For it is only right No one need to now I’m taking a flight Come with me he coaxingly said Where to sir I wearisomely asked I wish to show you how far you have come See all that in the distance? Is it not a long way? I won’t look I said for that route is already long done Why rehash memories that Made me start to run As he turned me to see my past I wept and was slowly set free As the worries I carried drained out of me I had come far and only now I know I hurried through life As it was so unpleasantly so As I am forced to stop And unwillingly look back I now know I wasn’t slowly dying But I was unwillingly living I did a lot and I did some well I thank god and that old man For showing me Life is what I lived and It wasn’t all a bitter pill
