The New Father
Her belly is swollen with our future heir when the bed sheets become all wet; It’s off to the hospital to do the Lamaze that for weeks we have practiced. Excited fear is in the air as I carefully help her into the car; Seatbelt extensions are required and I know just where they are. Even at three o’clock in the morning a maternity ward is wide awake; Family members that I have called arrive in the waiting room to wait. The miracle of birth is a wonderful thing when you are the spectator, expectant Dad; The fact that I cannot feel the pain for her makes me feel awfully bad. I see the head begin to present and my knees get wobbly and weak; Before I faint in the busy room I look for an empty chair to take a seat. The piercing cries of our newborn child produces renewed energy inside of me; The exhausted smile on my wife’s face, I am so happy to see. We have a brand new girl, without a name - we haven’t decided on one we both do like; For as long as I live the rest of my life, I’ll never forget this wonderful night.
