Blue Skies of Dakota
I cannot write of white sandy beaches For I am an inland raised girl Who lived under the blue sky of Dakota. I guess I’ll give “the sky” a whirl. If I had lived by one of the oceans Then I would have written of it. But I choose to honor bright skies of blue, Getting bluer the longer I sit. We had greyest of cold skies in winter. Sometimes they were white, full of snow. But endless expanse of blue summer skies Put on a magnificent show. Without blanket of smog to pollute it The sky was a clear, azure blue, It was just right for summertime dreaming, To recall in winter time too. It’s been many years since as a youngster I dreamed under vivid blue sky. Until gazing brought on a hunger for A slice of Mom’s blue-berry pie. When I am tired of smoke-yellowed heavens, And I long for skies I once knew, I pack up my tent to go back where I spent My youth under bluest of blue. Written for contest "Blue on blue on blue." My subject "The Sky" Won no. 2
