Pretend Play
Pretend Play As the day approaches an early dawn I watch you playing out in the lawn With your bulldozer you made a road For the dump truck with the heavy load You’re so cute playing out on your own The greatest pretender I’ve ever known In your cutoff jeans and baseball hat You made a village in no time flat With little homes and sticks for trees You build around it on your knees Oh how cute to watch you play I could stay here and watch all day But as the evening loses light It’s time to go in for the night And take a bath and brush your teeth But wanting to play, he gives me grief “A little longer, Daddy please” Batting his eyes in which to tease “A few more minutes”, my beautiful son “But then inside you must come” I know it’s difficult to end the day When he still wants to be outside and play But soon tiredness will set in As he regenerates to start again
