Leprechauns
When I was very, very small I read a poem of great renown. (Or maybe not so small at all) I loved that verse and wrote it down. The rhyme was called the daffodils And it was Mr. Wordsworth’s, (Will’s). The picture it left in my mind Was something that I pondered on. The only answer I could find, He’s speaking of a leprechaun. I’ve never seen a daffodil On any North Dakota hill. I fancied all these little elves, Dancing and laughing all the day, Carefree and enjoying themselves, Not knowing they were watched at play. They played a game in which they rolled Their darling little bags of gold Those dancers William thought were flowers And wrote about so tenderly Are leprechauns in twilight hours Their secret known to only me. I see them dancing over hills. Of course they are not daffodils For Debbie Guzzie's contest "Fantasy Land" Won no. 6
