Just In Case
Sitting in the pew I see dust floating past me On the ancient floor The stained glass is bold Modern cement walls are stark A bridge to the past The organ music Ranging wide through centuries Bleak Disharmony I try to enjoy Feeling a bit out of tune Reverently waiting The mid-day sun shines On the quiet audience Waiting for applause The final end comes Human voices returning Exhaling their sighs Chairs legs are shrieking People are milling about Looking up and down The box is in view Money needed for time spent Obligation reigns "Time for a coffee?" Quickly, we find the sign post Leading us away Modern tapestry Still deftly woven in France Overpowering We stand still and wait Not knowing which way to go The light draws us in There in the center Sits a modern Cardinal Homeless, calm, asleep I try not to stare He seems at peace in that chair As though he lives there Steadying ourselves We find our way to the cafe Sipping sacred cups We find the way out Lighting a candle for Dad Just in case it helps
