I’m on the metro, my thoughts in casual overflow, as I make my way to school. I’m listening to Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland,’ (quite possibly the best album ever made) with its cuts of African chants, watching tourists wearing tees adorned with Monet’s Water Lilies. Did the chanters imagine their voices being heard, decades later, on other continents—did Monet imagine his art as a fashion accessory a hundred years later? Maybe we’ll all be famous long after it matters. Passing Paris takes on spinning shades of blur as we reach speed. I enjoy the pure pleasure of people watching—and the noise—as long as everyone stays in their own lane—if you know what I mean. I was welcomed back to school—Fall’s throwback programming, like I'd never left. Forget decision-fatigue, the future is on and in the world of school, time’s the only currency. Forget fashion emergencies, I’ve chosen the right shoes, and the exact shade of lipstick required for emotional survival. I have my iPad out and I just read a headline that said: “Our Solar System Is Unstable and Doomed for Destruction.” Should we begin shopping for a new one? Well, that’s the news from the left Bank, the 7th arrondissement, on the south side of the Seine. . . A song for this: Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes by Paul Simon
