The Elegy of What We Were
You knew me ere my heart could name The tender ache that masquerades as flame; Through youthful years and skies of blue, Fate kept, in silence, leading me to you. Our names were joined in childish jest, Yet somehow time knew better than the rest; For beneath those careless, laughing days, A little constellation learned your name. Then October came, all amber, hushed, and slow, And you confessed the love I feared to know. Four years bloomed like roses after rain, Then withered softly beneath the weight of pain. I wandered through a world grown strange and cold, While clasping to your memory like gold. I lost myself somewhere between the years, And love became a language drowned in tears. Now you call me friend—how strange the word, When once your voice was all my heart had heard. How shall I call you merely someone I knew, When half my yesterdays still lead to you? You say our chapter must remain unread, That no second dawn shall rise where we once bled. Yet hope, that faithless little thing, remains— A candle trembling softly through the rains. Perhaps, when autumn gilds the years anew, Some wistful evening shall return me to you. And if you find the ruins of our spring, Perhaps you'll hear the heart that still remembers everything. For some loves do not perish when they part; They become old ghosts inhabiting the heart. And though our story sleeps beneath time's stone, You were my home— and home is never wholly gone.
