My Future Wife
My future wife, I do not know your face, Yet my soul has memorized your name. Somewhere beyond this present hour, You walk, you breathe, you pray the same. I see us not in fleeting fantasy, But in a vision hallowed and true, Becoming friends before we become lovers, I learning the universe that is you. What shall we do? We shall play like children unashamed of joy, Laugh until our ribs forget their ache, Turning our living room into an altar, Where every giggle is incense we make. We shall do all that husband and wife can do Not only in flesh, where passion finds its throne, But in purpose, in prayer, in planning tomorrow, Two pilgrims building a world of our own. How lovely it will be, How sweet, how divinely sweet, When my dreams no longer chase you in the night, Because you lie beside me, tangible, complete. You will be my friend in loneliness, My counsel in confusion, My peace in chaos, My poetry in prose. My future wife, keep your heart tender, Keep your lamp trimmed and burning bright, For I am pruning myself to be worthy of you, Becoming better than I was last night. I do not seek perfection in you, I seek permanence, presence, and grace, A love that will outlive time's tyranny, A love that death itself cannot erase. So wait for me, as I wait for thee, In honor, in faith, in fervent prayer, For when God finally writes our meeting, All of heaven will pause and stare.
