What if?
I told my family, "There's a film of me, A fool for all the world to see. Dancing before a bedroom glass, Over a pretty woman, I was an ass. A tune of silly words I'd say, Rehearsed a few times each day. That secret film was passed around, Just the start to bring me down. They judged me like the worst of men, As if I'd sinned again and again. My parents, feared I'd lost my mind, Left any hope for me behind. Years passed by; then I sought the law, To tell them something new I saw. "One sentence only," said the cop. "So make it brief, and then please stop." I said, "They enter where I sleep, And drugs into my brain do creep." Before I'd even said much more, He locked the station's heavy door. He called my home without delay, To have my family take me away. One sentence was enough, to prove I was stuck in a raving groove. I tried again some months from then, I wrote to officers again. Local, county, state alike, Hoping truth at last would strike. I wrote, "I'm drugged inside my room By drifting vapors filled with doom. They steal my rest throughout the night, They twist my thoughts beyond what's right." The police soon pulled into my drive, to stay calm I tried to strive. They took me to the loony bin Where well-meaning people locked me in. My family told me to stop bothering every kind of cop They said I have to take a med That's known to help what's in my head Again I spoke, "Baddies in the walls, Behind the ceilings, down the halls. They can even strike from cars that roam, Not to mention in our home." My family heard each fearful claim, And shrugged as I proved I was insane Only defectors could change their view; No righteous man in the bad guy crew. But what if We're already off the cliff What if across this continent, Lives are tortured, lives are bent What if the answer isn't meds Isn't mental hospital beds Should we rethink what we knew What if all of it is true?
