The Monument of Treachery
The Monument of Treachery The air in the Jagged Caverns was thick with the stench of sulphur and the low, wet growls of the Troll Triad. In the centre of their filth sat the Golden Eye, a relic of blinding purity that pulsed with the heartbeat of a god. They did not deserve it. They had snatched it from a celestial shrine with blood-stained claws; an act of unlawful sacrilege that cursed the very ground they stood upon. To the outside world, they looked like brothers. They whispered honeyed lies, conniving and plotting with wide, yellow-toothed grins. They stood in a circle, patting one another on the shoulder with heavy, treacherous palms, their voices rasping with false affection. "For the clan," they would grunt, "for our glory." But the "friendship" was a mask of glass. Each troll lived only for the snatch. They went to agonizing lengths to outmanoeuvre one another, setting subtle snares in the dark, poisoning the communal meat, and whispering madness into the others' ears. They were locked in a dance of lethal patience, each monster holding its breath, simply waiting for the other to finally grasp the prize so they would have a reason to bury a rusted blade in a "friend's" spine. Behind every false embrace, their minds churned with cold calculations of treachery. They were bound not by loyalty, but by a shared obsession with the artifact, a light that promised ultimate power even as it deepened the darkness in their hearts. The Golden Eye sensed the rot in their spirits and grew impossibly, supernaturally heavy. What was once a palm-sized trinket now possessing the weight of a dying star, pinning the trolls to the cavern floor. The closer they drew to the artifact, the more it pulsed with a rhythmic, judging heat. As they huddled together in their false brotherhood, patting shoulders while hiding blades, the Eye began to exert its Petrifying Gaze. It didn't strike them with lightning; it simply anchored them to their own greed. Slowly, the sulphurous air turned to silt in their lungs. Their limbs, heavy with the desire to snatch and kill, began to harden. The treacherous smiles they wore for one another became fixed, their skin turning from pebbled hide to cold, grey granite. As the last of the trolls’ flesh turned to cold, unyielding stone, the Golden Eye unleashed a final, blinding pulse of judgment. It was a frequency of pure truth that the jagged, corrupted cavern could no longer support. The mountain itself seemed to groan in protest of the trolls' sacrilege. Cracks, like veins of lightning, spiderwebbed across the ceiling. Massive stalactites, sharpened by eons of darkness, began to rain down like the spears of an angry god. The three stone statues, once brothers in greed, remained locked in their frozen betrayal. They could not run; they could only watch with wide, granite eyes as the world above them surrendered to gravity. With a deafening roar that shook the foundations of the earth, the ceiling buckled. Tons of rock and ancient earth cascaded down, burying the trolls in a tomb of their own making. The "unlawful" treasure they had spent their lives conniving to possess became the very weight that crushed them into the dust of history. As the dust settled and the cavern went silent, the Golden Eye did not vanish. Deep beneath the rubble, shielded by the ruins of the mountain, it continued to glow with a steady, immortal light, waiting in the dark for a soul pure enough to carry its weight without being broken by it. In seeking to own the Divine Light through darkness, the trolls proved that greed is a self-imposed prison. They spent their lives waiting for the perfect moment to betray one another, only to find that wickedness has no true allies. Ultimately, the Golden Eye serves as a reminder that spiritual wisdom cannot be stolen or hoarded; it can only be earned. To the corrupt, the truth is a heavy burden that leads to ruin; to the pure, it is the light that sets them free. Three hearts of stone, three souls of greed, Three hearts of stone, three souls of greed, Planted deep a bitter seed. A stolen light, a false embrace, With murder hidden in each face. They plotted long to snatch the prize, With honeyed words and hollow lies. “Dear friend,” they hissed, with hand on back, While sharpening blades for the attack. But truth is heavy, gold is cold, A burden that no thief can hold. The Eye perceived their rot within, And turned to rock their treacherous skin. Now frozen in a stone regret, Where sun and moon have never set. For he who seeks the light by sin, Is crushed by what he hoped to win.
