She sits— as dismembered fragments are assembled from scissor-cut snapshots of emotions hand-tossed and swirled in a shuffled collage of shattered sentiments. And the hands— Oh those hands! those spiked, disjointed, dagger-fingered hands— with nails dipped in demure green enamel, unassuming, subdued. A subtle counterpoint, a muted touche response, to the sharp and intrusive, deliberately distorted hands, so awkward. The sodden, mottled blue scarf sits like a dull, stilled stagnant pool, under the chin, reflecting the lips upside down as they once were, glowing brightly in the moonlight below. Her dress is crumpled— a black-velvet upheaval, a landscape of tension with ridges catching shards of light between dark holes looming below. The blackness is foreboding in the hard-edged, geometric shadows. The pose is defiant, a spiky repose, straining for what is so, for what shows, when the repose refuses to soften.
