To be sitting in a garden in the sun. And even at night it’s fun. With rose whispers in my ear. The grass is tender this time of year. Maybe I’ll be planted with care or toil. Be placed in the finest soil. Talk to a wise old tree. Who is taller and tougher than me. I can be a carnation, tulip, or rose. I can create delicate pollen landing on a rabbit’s nose. That’s all I want this year. Even if I can’t sing and cheer. Even if I’m planted there forever. Even after my family moved away together… Left me behind in the hard earth. Is that what a flower is worth? Maybe I’d be better off as a pine tree in winter weather. If I have to have this mortal tether. But trees can be chopped down for no reason. No matter the season. Dragged away like a body. Stiff, spiney, and sappy-yet not bloody. Being a human might be fine after all. But we’ll see how I’m feeling next fall!
