I smiled and sipped another taste of the brandy. I said quietly to myself about the truths of some, others would see as lies. Through the dark life could be heard in cries of the wild. Beasts that hunt to survive unseen by our eyes. I turned to the jolly man who slapped my back demanding more tales of my times out there in the wild. I caught his eyes and trepidation followed his smile. He saw a spark of something in my eyes. I told of the time that I’d met a fallen angel. Who was to me so polite, sincere and all of smiles. Who lit up the dark like a torch of pure sunlight and made this weary ol’ man feel so alive. He offered shelter, food and the promise of rest for these weakening ol’ legs o’mine! He offered all the things I’d thought that I’d needed to satisfy the appetites and lusts of my life. In return for a favour he’d ask me to honour. A favour that no money, truth, or promise could compromise. With held hand he waited for the shaking. Down I looked at the uneven ground and that wind on my back - aching o’mine. But I declined as I looked up at his offer. For me back to the dark track that I’d survived on all of my life. The smile had deadened and the eyes filled with fury as its hand slowly dropped to its side. No more words, no more warmth, no more light, promise or feeling. This dark figure then just disappeared right there in front of my eyes.
