I learned that God is the source of all I am, And the Holy Spirit is the only breath that stays A Comforter who holds the pieces of my heart Through the crushing weight of lonely days. I learned to love when love is not returned, To hold my life with open, empty hands. For things are temporary, prone to rust and dust, While the soul requires much higher demands. I put down the phone to see the faces near, The hurting hearts I missed when I was blind. I learned the grace of a frugal, simple life, Leaving the bitterness of the miser behind. I tasted cultures, flavors, and new worlds, Finding joy in the moments most ignore. I learned to love the person in the mirror, And find peace behind a solitary door. I learned that no one gets to build a roof Or place a heavy ceiling o’er my head. For God has built me with the wings to fly, To chase the dreams I once believed were dead. No longer hanging from a ceiling on a rope, I take the wisdom from the time you allowed. I’ve traded the shadows of a broken vow For the open sky, far above the cloud.
