Come and See
The glass box is a cold, shallow lung, Resting on the velvet throat of the hill. Step closer to the frost on the rim, Where the sunlight dies in a pale reflection Of a girl who traded her breath for a dream. "Come and see," the seven shadows hiss, Their backs bent from the weight of the mountain's vein. They have carved a cathedral out of the ice, To house the stillness of a porcelain throat And the hair that spills like a river of ink. The apple sits discarded in the frozen loam, A single, perfect puncture in its skin— A waxen heart that promised a crimson truth. See how the pulp has turned a bitter gall, The sweetness rotting into a darker nectar. The forest has grown a skin of white thorns, Tying the trees in a knot of static lace. There is no prince galloping through the pines, Only the wind rattling the latch of the lid, And the birds that have forgotten how to sing. Peer through the lid at the bloom on her cheek, A feverish red that refuses to fade. She is not sleeping; she is becoming the stone, A monument to the hunger of a golden mirror And the invitation to watch the winter win.
