Dear Nature,
I want thank you for loaning yourself to us. You have been here, shaping our landscapes, providing homes for humans and wildlife alike, for thousands of years. Our existence here is but a blink of an eye compared with your time here, existing as the sheer fabric of existence than underpins the very ground under our homes, feet, roads and buildings. We only have the environment around us on loan, and we have to tend it in order for us to be able to pass it along, still on loan, to the next generations, the next custodians. Nature is not ours to own, to abuse and to use to our own selfish ends. The landscape, each grain of soil, drop of water in our rivers, reed bed clinging to the water and land edge, all existing long before the people who walk amongst them now, and will continue long after we all become grains of soil ourselves…BUT only if we respect, nurture, understand and support the nature around us. Only when we fully understand it is a symbiosis and not a Master/Slave relationship, can we truly be a positive chapter in the story of our natural world, instead of a page ripped asunder by our own thirst and greed. Nature, I owe you everything, colours and form to soothe my eye, textures and temperatures to engage my skin, sounds to connect me through hearing the emotions of the world, scents changing daily to ensnare my imagination and spark memories and finally the beautiful bounty offered up, feeding the world, I taste of nature through its harvest and thank you for every bite.
