Seashell and Pinecone
I come from many places, But belong to none, So I always walk, To find a nest where my own culture would’ve spun. On my windowsill sits a seashell and a pinecone, Reminiscences of memories I carried from places bygone. I’ve lived near the mountains, I’ve lived near the coast, So I always falter when asked which I adore the most. As they bask in sunlight, they have conversations of their own, And I sit on my spot and wonder if they talk about their home. Do they yearn for the wise old mountain trees Or the salty exhilarating sea breeze. Do they promise each other a trip back home, Or dream of adventures on a boat like K. Jerome? Do they also live in the memories of that place, As they try to understand this rat race? Do they feel like me and yearn for that land, Without care whether it’s rock or sand. For I come from many places, But belong to none, So I always walk To find a nest where my own culture would’ve spun.
