When I lost out to a Koyal
I heard a Koyal coo at dawn Singing sweet unseen from somewhere, The dew when shined bright on the lawn, And grass at lea swayed with the air, I scarce if heard his song though sweet, For, it was seldom meant for me. I scarce if heard his song though sweet, For, it was seldom meant for me, The dew when still was on the lawn And grass at lea swayed with the air, My soul singing for me same time-- To me as good a melody. And suddenly he stopped singing As I wondered for what reason, The dew when still was on the lawn And grass at lea swayed with the air. Was I not singing well as him? Muffled its laugh a swaying tree. _______________________ Sestet | 10.01.2026 | cuckoo, dawn, lawn, song, tree Note: As one Sanskrit Subhashhitam goes: a Koyal that starts singing from early spring till late summer, stops with the advent of rains when frogs start their raucous mating songs, and the poet appreciates what the Koyal, a renowned singer, do. In this song too something similar happens. I was also greatly inspired by James Stephens ’The Rivals'.
