A birthday to remember
Eyes open on the floor Woken cold and sore Skin clinging to the carpet When will I be his target Spring day, sun rising Ready for something exciting My 9th birthday is here Surely they will take me somewhere Body still in discomfort Surely one day without hurt As my body stirs bruises shine I let out a whimpering whine Preparing for morning ablutions Unknowingly wakes other humans No one shouts no one talk Locked door may as well be a block Hours pass, only company a dirty bucket And a child with a shadow puppet Aiken e once again is my friend Always something to comprehend Muffled voices appear Feminine, careful not to mishear Silence! A click of the door My body frozen to the core My older sister appears Flanked by tyrants A quiet happy birthday spoken My face screams heart broken A bottle of water and a loaf of bread Tears fall down my head No one to save me No one to run and flee A chuckle from those supposed to care Was reared to be the spare I wish the floor could of swallowed me whole Click! The door locked closed I was just a boy, not a monster A small child not a monster Young and vulnerable Forced to be miserable Naughty child, not evil Made to be feeble Lost and lonely I just became stony Hours of loneliness followed While I cried and wallowed Missed by nobody Just a detainee A gentle knock startled me Click! Hushed voice I didn’t foresee My mother with a treat A pot noodle to eat A slice of cake, no fan fare I still offered to share The door closed quietly Always forced into compliancy
