That Winter's Night
One winter night I waited patiently for my long-time true love to come to me. I sat, so snug and warm, and looked outside, amazed at how much drabness snow can hide. Much like a tapestry unfurled, the snow enhanced the night with an appealing glow. I walked outside to while away the time till he arrived. The snowflakes felt sublime. They landed on my face and energized my spirit. Suddenly I realized— My love was there. He came and took my hand. His troubled look, I didn’t understand. I said, “Let’s stay outside a little while. The snow’s so glorious.” He tried to smile. “You don’t seem like yourself. What’s wrong?” I pled. My whole world was destroyed by what he said. “It’s not because of anything you’ve done that I’m not coming back. I’ve met someone . . .” I stood mute as he vanished from my life, this man who in just weeks would have a wife. The snowflakes stung. The magic of the night had vanished in an instant from my sight.
