He walks over and wraps his long left arm and meaty hand around me, picking me up like a teddy bear. “Finish it tomorrow,” is all he says, as he totes me off to bed on his left hip. “This is very sexy,” I cajole, but I’m in an awkward position and it comes out gaspingly. “We can finish that tomorrow too,” he yawns. Do you ever go back and look at your old pieces? Sometimes I go back and look at old poems. Not often. I’m usually drawn by someone’s comment. I don’t recall most of them, so my first thoughts are, ‘Ok, yeah, that was me,” but many seem like another life. I feel a tenderness toward my younger self - I see through her - I can feel her insides. She wanted to write well, to be open, accessible and emotionally raw - but most of all, she wanted to sound like an adult. ‘She wants to say the right thing,’ I think, when reading one. I was a much more self-cautious writer back then - some pieces took weeks to fashion. I remember the boundaries I set for myself and surprisingly, I haven’t seen any I wanna delete. So I guess there were no huge mistakes - and I love that, because it means maybe everything’s fated and I can’t make too many bad decisions now. I think we balance each other out pretty well. . .
