First Light Under Water
I plunged beneath, the salt against my face, The sea received me with a solemn song; Its silence drew me deeper into place, And urged me forward, steady, swift, and strong. Ahead I glimpsed the figures, tried and sure, Whose arms had cut this path in years before; Their strokes were patient, purposeful, and pure I strained to match them, hungering for more. At first the waters yielded to my hand, Each wave a gentle stair beneath my breast; The distance shrank, as though by kind command, And hope ran with me, tireless, and blessed. Then sudden winds unchained the quiet deep; The sky grew dark, the currents turned unkind; The sea broke over me, and seemed to keep No memory of the calm it left behind. I fought for air, but all the world was foam, The breath was fleeting, nothing firm to hold; The sea became no pathway, but a tomb, And whispered of an ending, stern and cold. But morning cast me battered to a shore, Where other youth lay resting, weak, yet true; And joy was mine to find, amidst the roar, That I was not the only one who flew Too soon into the waves with trembling breath, And shared my fate with kindred hearts, not death. Together then we turned our gaze again, And dared the deep with bonds the storm had made; For we had glimpsed, when drowning seemed most plain, The first light under water, undismayed. Now side by side we press toward the line, The horizon steady, opening like a door; What once we sought alone is now divine, For we arrive together, evermore.
