Good Intentions
“The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” common proverb The question in this quote plays on our minds in the quagmire of branding “goodness”. Take Saul of the New Testament for example. devout Pharisee that he was, he was blind. He started out on the road to Damascus already blinded by selfish ambition. Educated and engrossed in the law, Saul was intent on punishing those of the Way. The law (Ten Commandments) is goo-ood in the sense that it proves humans are not. It serves a higher purpose of bringing mankind to realize we are sinners who need a Savior. Ask any person to list the ten commandments and where do they start – not with the first four, overlooking the One who outlines righteousness. In submission to Him we'd withdraw good intentions When that much-needed Savior, Jesus, came to earth He proclaimed Himself as John records, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” and He added words which some never quote - “no man cometh to the Father but through me.” Creator God endows, empowers man with ability. We lose sight of His control when we thrive, thinking our ideas, voice and actions are spot-on, achieved by our self-driven capacity, competence. The road to heaven is overlaid with obedience. Its pavement is the solid foundation for our walk, as we submit to the One who governs the true and righteous. We study Jesus and see what is wrong with us; our good intentions celebrate our will rather than His.
