FISHING BOND WITH MY SON
By the shores of the lakes unexpected bonding over fishing, my son and I put our hearts and soul’s right, while feeling solace in the nights. As my son gravitated to the love of fishing I joined in his enthusiasm where we found a spiritual healing and mending of hearts. The fight to reel the fish in was exciting for us and getting him out of the lake onto the shore was a momentous achievement. It took many hours at night as we fished usually 10:00pm until about 2:00am due to extreme heat in the daytime they don’t bite. Most times Daniel lent me his reflective bobbers but sometimes I relied only on the feeling of fish tugging at my line. We listened only to ripples of water, breathing, with every beat of our hearts waiting for fish to bite were our only thoughts. Daniel used sophisticated lures, bobbers and equipment he always caught catfish, big and small. I called him the catfish king! My equipment was basic with a lightweight rod and fake white worms as I sought to catch little pan fish, mostly bluegill. The only sounds were of crickets, fishing banter and me yelling to Daniel for help as I caught a fish too afraid to remove hook from his mouth. Sometimes, I stood with my rod a bit away from Daniel so we wouldn’t cross lines but we were still somehow very close. Such, introspection on our late night fishing over the dark waters with only a dim light from the moon had healing powers. Our spirits did vindicate each other as the universe and water perpetually flowed sadness disappeared in the murky waters. We sat content for once in our lives. With hope waiting for a bite while our soul’s ever so slowly drifting out into the darkness. Standing at the banks of the lake seasons had come and gone. Steamy summer nights leading to cool winters our souls had nourishment. In the quiet of the moonlight we did spiritually entwine with no more heartache. We had an unequivocal connection to nature. Each fish Daniel caught was a moment of pure joy, each one I caught was a welcomed surprise. Not many words spoken other than which bait we should try, surely all what was unsaid happened in our spirits. In the shadows of the night we did listen closely and we both became wiser. Common ground we did restore. Our hearts held by the obscurity of the night and with such contentment we did finally accept one another. Only with time in the dimness of the night fishing we did rebuild our love for each other. This unforeseen fishing bond is truly a miracle from God’s beautiful and amazing natural wonders. To my dearest son, Daniel, I’ll never forget our fishing nights!
