What If Forever Was Never Meant to Be
What if forever was never meant to be? Just a story we told ourselves to sleep at night, A myth we wrapped around broken promises So they wouldn’t hurt as much in the morning. I loved you like a secret — One I couldn't tell myself out loud. You were my friend, But I whispered prayers hoping you’d look at me With the same ache I buried each day. You… You loved with ease, Like the word "forever" was never heavy. You held hands with people While I held back my entire heart. I look at you sometimes, And I don’t understand — How someone before me missed The way your eyes hold quiet thunderstorms, How they never saw That there's a whole damn universe Spinning softly inside your silence. And still, I stay. Even when it hurts. Because some loves don’t ask for attention — They just ask to be carried In the spaces between words, In glances we pretend not to notice. This love… It asks too much. It makes me prove myself every day, Like I haven’t bled enough already Just to stay near you. I was better without this. Stronger, maybe. But even then, I find myself waiting, Looking at the moon sitting quietly beside the river, While my heart sits quietly beside my regret. You call him your "friend," And he brings flowers — While I bring poems you’ll never read. He holds your hand in the sunlight, While I hold my breath in the shadows. What a strange kind of love this is — One I must hide, One I must protect, Even from you. Because some stories aren’t told. Some stories are lived in silence. Some loves… Were never meant to be forever.
