He came, he’d often say, only to prepare the way, For the One to come, mightier than him. T’was a day like any other, John was standing in the water Baptizing anyone who would repent. Then came the Son of Man, in fulfillment of God’s plan, For from the Father was He truly sent. The Holy Spirit came down like a dove out of the sky, Then in a voice like thunder we could hear the Father cry, “This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.” We’d asked John who he was, and I guess it was because We were waiting for Messiah to appear. We thought that John might be the very one to set us free. He said he wasn’t but that One was near. Then he said, “Behold the Lamb.” And we didn’t understand But we followed where he said that we should go. It was Jesus, called the Christ, Who had come to pay the price For the sin that happened oh so long ago. The Holy Spirit came down like a dove out of the sky, Then in a voice like thunder we could hear the Father cry, “This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.” So, we followed Him that day, the Truth, the Life, the Way, The twelve of us who knew He was the One. We followed where He led, listened to all that He said. And tried to do what we thought He’d have done. Though with water John baptized, One we learned to recognize Came to give the Spirit to us one and all. For John has testified to what he’d seen with his own eyes And we responded when we heard the call. The Holy Spirit came down like a dove out of the sky, Then in a voice like thunder we could hear the Father cry, “This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.”
