Middle America
I was born in middle America. Right in the center of the land of the free. Raised on stories of fact and of fiction. Told about places I'd never see. I was taught all about limitations But I really can't say I agree. I went to school where my daddy told me And I got a job when school was let out. So, I worked the days as I was expected But I dreamed the nights of when I'd break out. Although I could see life all around me, I never understood what it was about... We grow strong in middle America. Taking for granted our emotional health. But nothing is wrong in middle America That isn't the same as everywhere else... I'm living here in middle America. Watching life slide by on T.V. Trying to reconcile what I'm seeing With everything I was taught to believe. So many signals, all contradictions, I don't think that they're meant for me... I want to travel to Europe or Hollywood. All of those places you see in the news. I want to witness life in the making Like all of those tourists that pass two by two. But I get tired when I walk to the mailbox and I don't think I can afford new shoes. So we belong in middle America. Our only concern is the state of our wealth. But nothing is wrong in middle America That isn't the same as everywhere else... I'm living here in middle America. This is where I will probably die. With all of its faults and its limitations, Still, I'll be sad to tell it goodbye... This is a song for middle America... Don't put it high out of reach on a shelf. 'Cause nothing is wrong in middle America That isn't the same as everywhere else.
