You Broke Mine
There’s blood upon my hands now, I can’t lie, And though I’ve killed in war, I don’t deny That your blood’s cost me more in guilt and pain, So how am I to ever love again? I say you broke my heart, but I broke yours, When over the two of us I chose the wars. Though for my country I have killed, it’ true, I never thought I’d end up killing you. Your strength was gone, and so was mine, but still I climbed each obstacle, and every hill. But you, who at first valiantly fought, When there for me I need you, were not. You gave me everything you could, I know, But when I needed more, you had to go. You gave me everything you had, but now I have to find my way alone somehow. You came to me as nothing; I’d refine You into something strong and brave and mine, And then you still fell back into that life, Of lines and bumps and rails and hurt and strife. My choice was clear: the one who cared for me, The one who was, and not he who could be. It ended how it started, with a line: You said I broke your heart, but you broke mine.
