WHAT IF YOU CAME BACK
I know it will never happen But I can pretend it might. In my mind’s eye I can see you standing in the light. There you are in the doorway Ready to step inside You’re smiling at me as you did Long ago when I was a bride. Now I am long past being young But you are still in your prime. Can you stay awhile, I ask. Please say you have the time. What will we talk about Today, after years have passed? Do you know what I’ve been doing I’ve longed to tell you at last. I am lonely without you And think of you every day. I want to wrap my arms around you, To once again hear you say Those three little words we shared daily Before you were taken away. Won’t you come back for a visit? Just once would give me some hope. A small and sweet encounter Might actually help me to cope. Oh, I know it will never happen But I can pretend it might. Then I watch you turn around As you fade into the night.
