Mrs Banks, the head teacher, assumed there was history between the families, but it actually turned out they had never met. First-day nerves, Mrs Banks thought. Three months into term, they were still fighting, and Mrs Banks concluded that some kids just didn't get on. Marjorie and Tania managed to fight their way through the whole of the primary term, and on leaving, Mrs Banks wondered if High school would change anything between them. High school didn't change a lot for Marjorie and Tania, and although they didn’t meet that often when they did, the inevitable happened. It was on the final day of fourth year they last met. Tania would be leaving for a career she didn’t know. Marjorie would be staying on, eventually going onto Med school to become a doctor. Words were exchanged by Tania, to the tune of. Thank god I never have to see you ever again. Marjorie retorted with the words. Someday you’ll walk into my surgery, and I’ll have the pleasure of telling you, you’re dying. Well, if that was to be their last fight, it turned out to be a belter, both girls giving as good as they got, only finishing when the teachers separated them. Marjorie, not only went on to become a doctor but also a successful surgeon. Tania moved from job to job till one day she saw a notice in a hair salon looking for a junior. Tania applied, got the job, and finally found her vocation in life. Twenty years later, she owned two salons herself, which were thriving. The only thing missing in her life was a decent guy and to compound matters, it seemed she was never away from the hospital. But at least today she would finally see the consultant and get some answers. She decided not to drive to the hospital because parking was always a nightmare, and she really didn’t need the stress. It turned out to be the right choice, she made it in plenty of time, giving her time to relax before the nurse called her for a few more tests before she got to see the consultant. Tania entered the room and looked into the eyes of someone she hadn't seen in a long, long time. Marjorie also just realised who was in front of her. It was Tania who broke the ice. Long time, Marjorie. Yes, long time, Tania. Listen, if you want another doctor, I’ll understand. You are kidding, it took me long enough to see you, just spit it out. It’s not good, Tania. Are you saying what I think you’re saying? Listen, Tania, did you bring anyone with you? Marjorie, spit it out. You’ve maybe got over a year. It was a few seconds before, Tania spoke. Do you remember the words you said to me at our last fight in school? Knowing me, it would be something crass. Let me remind you. You said, ‘’SOMEDAY YOU'LL COME INTO MY SURGERY AND I'LL HAVE THE PLEASURE OF TELLING YOU, YOU'RE DYING’’ Is that ironic or what? I maybe didn't factor something in when I said those words. What didn't you factor in? I’ve got the same diagnosis. Marjorie, if that’s your idea of buttering me up, it isn't working. I’m not buttering you up, straight up. Jesus, Marjorie, I don’t know if I should cry, give you a cuddle, or just bloody laugh. You could do all three. Yeah, I just might. What should I be doing, what will you be doing with your time? Well, since my husband left me to shack up with a little blond nurse, I’ve decided to sell everything, head out to Vegas for six months and have a good time. When are you going? One month today. What about you, do you have any ties.? I’ve got two hairdressing salons, and I think my boyfriend left me for the same nurse, so that’s one less tie. Bloody men. Listen Tania, I’ll give you my personal number, if you need to talk about anything give me a phone. Tania left the hospital, strangely in a positive mood for someone who only had over a year to live.
