I remember swimming in the cool lake and the delightful waves, drenching my young skin. I remember my going fishing and was so glad when the fish got away and swam to freedom. I remember the smell of outdoor barbecue pork and beef, coleslaw and the closeness of family. I remember jumping off the white, wood pier, into welcoming waves. Despite being so terrified but overjoyed that I could do it. I remember neighborhoods in Chicago and we rarely locked doors, as there was an absence of fear. I remember playing on the sidewalk with my childhood friends, under the summer moon that came to smile at us. I remember the freedom of no seat belt laws and we stood in the back of Daddy’s car, played games and house. I remember when cars were not made the size of coffee cans, and were stunning, with huge, whitewall tires . I rememcer the sane and beautiful music of the 1940’s like Cole Porter and George Gershwin, playing in the car under full monlit summer’s eves. I remember how we were so very proud to be Americans, whose theme was whispered by the trees!! Even though I am older~all these, are the paintings on my soul. I remember the laughter and joys of my carefree days. But ~ my best memory is a surprise, and is yet to come! 7/3/2024
