Mountebank
"Who will believe a mountebank? Everyone if she is good." ~Andy Griffith~ Carefully she wrote on the back of a fifty dollar bill. ”Have a happy birthday dear, I know you will” After writing that sweet little verse, It was carefully folded and put inside her purse. She walked with her young daughter who was her pride. New to this shop she entered, and her girl waited outside. Her groceries totaled forty nine dollars no more. She handed the fifty dollar bill to the shop assistant in the store. Taking her groceries and her dollar change she left the shop. Her little girl came into the store, only allowed to buy one lollypop. Looking at her change, she loudly said “I gave you a fifty dollar note. I know because its my birthday and my aunt on the back she wrote!” “No” said the shop keeper ”I know you gave me a five dollar bill” The child cried most loudly and people standing by said “Look in your till” "I know it was only a five dollar note," the shop keeper took offense. "What’s in your till will prove who is wrong, doesn’t that make sense?" Opening the till for all to see there was a five dollar note, and then, A fifty dollar note, on it a birthday message hand written in pen. There is my birthday money, the child smiled with glee. Onlookers cheered and suggested she should be given back her money. One man said I think a free lollypop is in order for the sweet child. The shop keeper realized her mistake and felt very meek and mild. "Of course dear here is your fifty back and keep the lollypop too I hope you have a wonderful birthday and my best wishes to you." The young girl was smiling as she, didn’t know who to thank. Learning lessons early in life , to be poor its handy to be a mountebank.
