Babe
Although he lived a few doors down the street, it was by accident that we would meet Returning home on a Halloween night, my children squealed in delight In a flash they took off at a run I stood there calling the name of each one Up the stairs of a house, they went who ever lived there, I didn't have a hint A little old man with a smile of gold, gathered my children in his fold Over their heads, his eyes met mine I knew in a minute that everything was fine Long gone, was his bowl of candy bar mini's he replaced them with a jar of pennies He pulled up a chair, said, "please sit here" excused his self and returned with a beer That was the first of many conversations, It didn't take long to loose my reservations He called all the "kids" sweetheart and honey, supplied them with handfuls of candy and money He had such a way, this sweet old gent, I could swear that he was heaven sent He was known as "Babe" a name he earned, by being a great baseball player, we learned He took time to know everyone he met, the kind of a person not easy to forget A simple operation, put on hold too long, became a tragedy, something went wrong Such a loss for his friends and wife, when, this fine man lost his life I can still hear him whistling a tune, when I see a full harvest moon The years have flown by, oh so fast, he still holds a special place in the past My friend Babe
