I Am a Rock
I am a rock like all the others We look alike, we could be brothers I blended in, I am not rare Another stone without a care A kid walked by and looked at me I did not understand you see Why he chose me, a choice so bold He was a child, just eight years old He was alone, no way of knowing About the fear he soon was showing He walked so slowly by the school Not looking to break any rule Then lost in thought, just looking down He spotted me and with a frown He pull me up and held me tight And suddenly, I was in flight Now this is where the fear comes in He had not looked where he had been Right by the school, his throw was strong And now he knew his aim was wrong He had not looked nor had he thought And in his eyes the fear was caught A window like a target bold My path to shatter glass unfolds I watched him as I sailed away The horror on his face that day He saw me on the path to shatter His actions now would never matter I am a rock, I have no skill But trying hard with all my will To change the path my flight would take Just an inch might stop the break The window style a wooden fringe Two sides swung open on a hinge And center met, a wooden strip Two inches on the center lip With all my might I redirected The kid, I knew, needed protected I struck the window’s center brace And fell to earth without a trace The other children heard the sound With startled stares they looked around But there was nothing left to see No damage done by him or me I saw the kid begin to breathe A sigh of relief he would heave A stroke of luck was on his side A simple stone had been his guide I am a rock, like all the others But if I only had my druthers I try to do what I can do Cause rocks, like kids, have feelings too
