Swatch Dogs and Diet Coke Heads
Veronica Sawyer, a rebel in plaid She joined the Heathers, but they were so bad They ruled the school with their cruel games and lies But Veronica had enough of their fake smiles and hair ties She met a dark stranger who taught her to kill He said it was justice, but he did it for the thrill They poisoned the queen, made it look like a suicide They shot the jocks, framed as lovers who died But soon she realized he was crazier than she thought He had a bigger plan knowing he wouldn’t get caught He rigged some bombs and set them to explode For he wanted to end the high school status quo She tried to stop him from blowing up the school She faced him with courage and called him a fool She lit her cigarette and watched him go boom Then walked away calmly leaving him to his doom Veronica Sawyer, a survivor in blue Learned from her mistakes and started anew She ignored the snobs which was no big loss She was Veronica Sawyer, Westerburg High's new boss *I wrote this poem on January 21, 2024, as part of a ’30 days of poetry’ January challenge. This was day 21 and the prompt was: Think of a recent movie you watched and create a poem about one character specifically, or an interaction between two characters that was memorable. When I read this poetry prompt, I had just finished watching the 1988 movie Heathers. I decided to write about the character Veronica Sawyer played by Winona Ryder.
