The Last Supper
Jesus made the announcement that caused bewilderment and shock. His disciples took time to accept his words and take stock. He announced that by one of them He would be betrayed. Surprise fell over, the last supper where the table was laid. Judas leaned behind Peter, putting his hand on John. Leonardo Di Vinci allowed Judas to be prominent there upon. The artist did not hide him in shadows as one would expect. And he depicted John so gentle, almost a feminine aspect. Jesus is painted, arms outstretched reaching for bread and wine. It is said this represents the triangle of the Holy Trinity so divine. Vibrant colours for this magnificent mural painted on a wall in 1498. A vanishing point where light is brighter and the focus we appreciate, Converges on the figure of Jesus and He more noticeably stands out. Imagine the mood seconds before the room was filled with doubt. All enjoying a meal with their friend, their teacher with no illusion Saying one of them would betray him must have caused confusion. They all loved him, which of them could it be? Could this be true? De Vinci captures the horror, the questioning, on each, even Judas too. His Last Supper is representative of Leonardo’s chiaroscuro technique. His use of perspective when the announcement renders the mood bleak. The artist was mindful to depict what he called “motions of the soul.” Through postures, gestures and expressions to make sure they were whole. This is considered perhaps the most important painting in the world. Da Vinci created a remarkable painting to let The Last Supper to be unfurled.
