I Beat Up the Sun
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The law is not against such things. Galatians 5:22-23 I BEAT UP THE SUN The sun is finally coming up. I beat it up with my hands, hammering the tablet and my eyes darting back and forth as if I were an old-fashioned carriage on a typewriter. Reading my friends before cockcrow. Gears, spinning, pushed and pulled me out of bed. Galatians scripture meditation off a tooth. Reading to get it right. Proverbial pen bleeding ink as I think about the long, long day ahead, filled with pounding, staining, sustaining, amusement of midnight colors, lights in the church windows, all else stark begging for a good night’s sleep. Deep, I shall dream in the morning, as I set sail, way past the sun. But alas, it will not be so, for coffee clashes with that ship called friendship, so I will pour myself out of bed, clean up a bit, stir in cream, motivate myself into believing I can do it all. Light in the church window will create a smile, because I put it there; true of snow and the stars, too. I can do anything as long as I get a grip on the day. Fruit of the Spirit, all nine - a healthy feast.
