The Unsupervised Stop Sign
THE UNSUPERVISED STOP SIGN It has been at least three hours now Driving across the flat barren waste The road like a straight charcoal line Heading West toward the setting sun Out here with no traffic, nor anyone And my mission has only just begun Now on the seat beside me is my gun In the distance, I view a lonely sign On just what crazy laws is this based Is an official somewhere taking a bow I slow down and stop, to look in dismay A stop sign at a junction with a dusty lane Again, no surprise, with nothing in sight Is there a message for me and my mission Should this make me change my decision If I stop now, like I was receiving a vision Perhaps my vengeful anger needs revision Maybe I won’t make Carson City tonight Even reconsider what justice means again And leave due retribution to another day
