2023 Fifa Womens World Cup - Spain Vs Sweden
Spain and Sweden were scoreless leading up to the 81st minute when Salma Paralluelo fired a low shot to beat the keeper to give Spain the lead. Sweden's Rebecka Blomqvist leveled late in the 88th minute. Sweden’s celebration lasted only a minute. Olga Carmona scored a beauty off a corner kick, firing Spain into their first Women's World Cup final. All of this took place within 10 minutes! Sweden's semifinal exit marked the fourth time this has happened to The Blue and Yellow at this stage in World Cups. This, plus losing the 2003 World Cup final and two silver medals in the past two Olympic Games, have made Sweden specialists in international tournament disappointment. Wiping tears from her eyes, Sweden's captain Kosovare Asllani said in a post-game interview, "I'm so tired of crying championship tears... We deserved to be in the final, but that's how football is." But it's not over yet for Sweden. They will face the loser of the Australia and England semifinal in the third-place playoff. Sweden will attempt to finish third for the fourth time. Kudos to La Roja, the youngest team to reach the final (average age 25.3) since 1995. Sweden's deja vu fairytale finish for Spain— cheers for La Roja!
